Kara Sanford

Renewing Hearts and Minds

As a counselor, my primary goal is enabling my clients to discover the path towards healing, hope, and growth. The environment that I provide is one of warmth and safety and one in which my clients can explore the ways in which events of the past affect them in the present, enhancing quality of life and examining the barriers to healing and growth.

Education and Experience

I completed my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Richmont Graduate University.  As long as I can recall, I have been passionate about offering grace and hope to those who are hurting, and during my time at Richmont, I completed a certificate in trauma counseling and gained valuable skills and a focused passion for walking alongside those who are hurting from the impact of traumatic events. For my  graduate internship training, I worked in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, giving me a broad experience in a variety of mental health challenges. I also had the experience of co-leading a group for female survivors of childhood sexual abuse under the direction of Terry Freeman, my current Clinical Director and Supervisor. I am a certified Prepare Enrich couples therapist. I love working with couples and I am trained in Gottman style couples therapy.

I work with a broad range of clients, including adult individuals, couples, teens, and families on a variety of issues such as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relational problems, and life stress. I am integrative in my theoretical approach and employ a variety of theories and techniques, often drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamics, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness.
